As a global Fellowship, Alcoholics Anonymous is underpinned by a set of guidelines known as the 12 Traditions. One such guideline (the 7th Tradition) is that every AA group should be self-supporting. That means it can’t accept outside donations. This is to keep AA free of outside influence. It ensures AA remains focused on its primary purpose – to help alcoholics get sober.
A ‘hat’ is passed around at your individual AA group for voluntary donations to cover the costs of your meeting hall, tea and coffee etc.

Contributions are to be made by AA members only.
Members can if they wish, donate to the charity that supports the AA Fellowship – The General Services Board.
